Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
