Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
