The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning points late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points of his own, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the game, the team's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were awarded their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.
In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
