Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
